A Sacramento Historical Tour
Start at Sutter’s Fort which is the original site but much
smaller now than the former 50-acre fort. Native Americans advised Sutter to
build away from the rivers which flood regularly. It is restored and often
staffed by volunteers in period costume and maintained by the State Parks
from 10 am – 5 pm. Fees are $4/adult and $2 for youth 2-17, as of February,
2009. For a group of 10 or more, Reserve America: 866-240-4655.
The State Capitol building has been beautifully restored and is free and
open to the public from 8-5 M-F and from 8:30-5 Sat. and Sun. The public can
observe when the legislature is in session from the balconies.
The Leland Stanford Mansion at 8^th and N Street has also been restored but
is only open for guided tours for $8/adult. (916-324-0575)
The Railroad Museum has real trains and historical exhibits. Four “cars” can
be walked through and model trains are upstairs, including Thomas the Tank.
Hours are 10-5, 916-445-6645. It is in Old Sacramento City, restored
historic buildings and museums, an old school house museum, theater,
paddle-wheel boat now a hotel and restaurant, stores and a variety of
restaurants, weekend train rides, horse and wagon rides. Fun to explore.
There is visual evidence of the original city but the level now is at least
15 feet higher due to years of flooding, now controlled by levees. It is
strange not to see the river which is the reason for the city of Sacramento
unless you walk to it and look down.
